![]() ![]() ![]() In a true celebration of the franchise's 25th anniversary, these new levels draw on the graphics and sound styles of 1993's Link's Awakening, 1992's A Link to the Past and the 1987 original Legend of Zelda from the NES. You unlock "The Realm of Memories" by clearing the main story mode once, and it transports you and your friends back in time to the Zelda series' oldest installments. New levels have been added beyond the 2002 original's established array. And that would have been enough of an upgrade right there – but the developers went the extra mile for this port. You can actually, legitimately expect to be able to get a Four Swords game going easily here. ![]() Since Nintendo's handhelds now connect wirelessly, the barrier of each person additionally needing a Link Cable is gone too. While fun could be had with them if you jumped through all the hoops to get them set up, playing this Anniversary Edition is as easy as finding other friends with a DSi, DSi XL or 3DS to connect with – since the game is downloadable for free, the barrier of each person needing a physical Game Boy cartridge is gone. ![]() But the ease of connectivity that this new DSiWare edition introduces immediately renders those old versions obsolete. As mentioned above, it debuted alongside a port of A Link to the Past on the Game Boy Advance nearly a decade ago, then it inspired a standalone GameCube sequel. It was a design developed to compliment the series' standard single-player adventures by letting four players come together, each take control of a differently-colored Link character and simultaneously cooperate and compete with one another through a series of special challenge maps specifically built to support four times as many heroes as normal. If you're unfamiliar with what Four Swords is, it's summed up nicely in two words: multiplayer Zelda. ![]()
